  • The First 8 Weeks: Building a Strong Foundation for Healthy Chicks

The first two months of a chick’s life set the stage for long-term health, productivity, and egg laying ability. During this period, chicks grow rapidly and depend entirely on proper care and nutrition. Key priorities include: Maintaining proper brooder temperature Providing clean, dry bedding Ensuring constant access to clean water Providing consistent access to organic starter feed Avoiding overcrowding and stress Nutrition is especially important during this stage. Natures Grown Organic feeds provide balanced protein and essential nutrients to support strong bones, feather development, and immune health. Birds raised on consistent, high-quality organic nutrition early in life are more likely to develop into productive, resilient laying hens. A strong start leads to stronger birds throughout their lifetime.

  • Bringing Chicks Home: How to Prepare for Success

Bringing home new chicks is exciting, but preparation is critical to ensure they stay healthy and grow properly. The first few weeks of life are the most important for development. Before your chicks arrive, make sure your brooder is ready. Your brooder should include: A heat source maintaining 95°F for the first week Clean, dry bedding such as pine shavings Fresh water available at all times Certified organic chick starter feed Protection from drafts Chicks need immediate access to feed and water when they arrive. Gently dipping each chick’s beak into the water helps them learn where to drink. The use of crumbled feed promotes consistent intake from the start. Providing a high-quality organic starter feed from day one ensures chicks receive the protein, vitamins, and minerals needed to support immune development, feather growth, and overall strength. Natures Grown Organics chick starter is formulated to promote steady, healthy growth without synthetic additives. The use of crumbled feed promotes consistent intake from the start. Proper preparation and nutrition create a strong foundation for healthy birds that will thrive as they mature.

  • Biosecurity Basics: Protecting Your Chickens

Biosecurity may sound like something only large commercial farms need to worry about, but it is just as important for small and backyard flocks. Biosecurity simply means taking steps to prevent disease from entering or spreading within your flock. Chickens can be exposed to disease through contaminated shoes, equipment, new birds, wild birds, rodents, and even visitors. Many poultry illnesses spread quickly and can cause serious health issues, reduced egg production, or even loss of birds. Simple biosecurity practices include: Limiting visitors who have contact with other poultry Washing hands before and after handling birds Using dedicated footwear or boot covers in your coop Cleaning and disinfecting equipment regularly Keeping feed stored in sealed containers to prevent contamination Feed quality also plays an important role in flock protection. Using certified organic feed from trusted sources like Natures Grown Organics helps ensure your birds receive clean, consistent nutrition without unnecessary additives. Proper nutrition supports immune health and helps birds better resist stress and disease challenges. Healthy flocks start with prevention. A few simple habits, combined with high-quality organic nutrition, can keep your birds healthy and productive.

  • Checklist for Adding or Replacing Poultry in your Flock

Starting out with healthy poultry is the best way to keep flocks safe from disease. Follow this checklist when adding new birds to your flock. Only purchase or source poultry from NPIP-certified breeders, hatcheries, and dealers. When sourcing replacement poultry, you can request a copy of the hatchery or source farm’s biosecurity protocols. Confirm that the poultry you purchase tested clean for the same diseases your current flock tested for. When purchasing poultry in person, check for signs of good health and approximate age. Do not purchase birds that appear old or unhealthy. Always transport replacement or new poultry in equipment and vehicles that are regularly cleaned, disinfected, and inspected. For commercial operations, the tractor/trailer carrying the birds should follow premises entry biosecurity protocols when entering the farm. Be sure to clean and disinfect tools, cages, and any other equipment used for transport. Return empty cages to the trailer and then clean and decontaminate the cages before taking them to another site. Wear site-specific clothing, including footwear, when loading or delivering poultry. For commercial operations, personnel loading poultry cages into the trailer should wear site-specific clothing or not enter the Line of Separation. Once home, quarantine the new additions for 30 days. Check for sneezing, coughing, nasal drainage, swollen eyes, mites, lice, and other health issues daily. After combining new birds with your existing flock, check original stock daily for any signs of illness. The stress of this change can cause an underlying illness to surface. To prevent bullying, do not add young poultry to your existing flock until all the birds are about the same size. • How Organic Feed May Change your Egg Appearance

When it comes to raising chickens, many farmers and backyard enthusiasts are turning to organic feed for its numerous benefits. One of the most noticeable changes you might observe when switching to organic feed is the appearance of your eggs. Here’s how organic feed can make a difference: 1. Richer Yolk Color Organic feed is often packed with natural ingredients like alfalfa, and other greens that are high in xanthophylls. These natural pigments can give the egg yolks a deeper, more vibrant orange color compared to the pale yellow yolks produced by chickens fed conventional feed. This richer yolk color is not only visually appealing but also indicates a higher nutrient content. 2. Stronger Eggshells The quality of the feed directly impacts the strength of the eggshells. Organic feed typically contains higher levels of calcium and other essential minerals, which contribute to stronger, more resilient eggshells. This means fewer cracked or broken eggs, making them easier to handle and store. 3. Improved Egg White Consistency Chickens fed organic feed often produce eggs with firmer, more consistent egg whites. This can be attributed to the balanced nutrition provided by organic feed, which supports overall chicken health and egg quality. Firmer egg whites are particularly desirable for cooking and baking, as they hold their shape better and provide a superior texture. 4. Enhanced Taste and Freshness Many people who switch to organic feed report that their eggs taste better. The natural, wholesome ingredients in organic feed can lead to eggs with a richer, more robust flavor. Additionally, because organic feed supports the overall health of the chickens, the eggs tend to stay fresher for longer periods. Switching to organic feed can bring about noticeable improvements in the appearance, quality, and taste of your eggs. Whether you’re a small-scale farmer or a backyard chicken keeper, the benefits of organic feed are clear. Not only will your chickens be healthier and happier, but you’ll also enjoy the superior quality of the eggs they produce. So why not make the switch to Natures Grown Organics and see the difference for yourself?
